Lime Kiln Restoration Project
This Lime Kiln has been carefully repaired and conserved in 2025 by Hovingham Estate with thanks for grant funding from Defra’s Farming in Protected Landscapes programme.
The restored Lime Klin is an excellent example of this type of structure which were once widespread throughout the Howardian Hills National Landscape.
Limekilns were used for burning limestone to produce lime, most likely during the 18th century. After transportation from a nearby limestone quarry, the raw product would be fired in the kiln to produce lump lime, also known as quick lime.
The end product had two uses:
-
In agriculture, it was dispersed over local farm land for use as a soil improver
- To make plaster, mortar and concrete for the building industry
